Nyack, NY – May 17, 2010 – The Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has awarded a $76,000 grant to Nyack Hospital for its Screening Coordination Program.

“We are very proud of the confidence that Komen Greater New York City has shown in awarding us this grant. The funding will allow us to continue to expand our community outreach in serving those in our area who are financially unable to access screening programs through the traditional medical system,” stated Patricia Joseph, MD, Director, Breast & Women’s Health Prevention Services at Nyack Hospital.

Nyack Hospital’s Screening Coordination Program provides mammography screenings to uninsured and underinsured women ages 40-64 in the community to help combat the high incidence of breast cancer in Rockland County.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest breast cancer organization, and the Greater New York City Affiliate is one of 125 Affiliates on the front lines dedicated to ending breast cancer in their communities. Komen Affiliates fund innovative programs that help women and men overcome the cultural, social, educational and financial barriers to breast cancer screening and treatment.

“At the Komen Greater New York City Affiliate, we conducted a needs assessment of our community and discovered that these women were not always able to access screening services and quality medical care, due to financial constraints,” said Ivy Gamble Cobb, Chair, Grants Policy and Education Committee. “We are confident that through Nyack Hospital’s Screening Coordination Program, these uninsured and underinsured women in the community will have access to the care they need.”
