Bronxville, NY – March 4, 2010 – There has been a lot of buzz about repeated Computed Tomography (CT) scans raising a person’s risk for cancer due to the levels of radiation emitted during the diagnostic test. Lawrence Hospital Center now offers a new Low Dose CT scan device that reduces up to 40 percent of that radiation. “Not only is it safer, but it allows us to get better images faster,” states Raymond Farquharson, Administrative Director of Radiology at Lawrence Hospital Center. “It also provides peace of mind to parents whose children may need a CT scan. Given their age, it is a far better option for them if they are in need of an image,” insists Farquharson.
Today, Lawrence is the only hospital in Westchester County and lower Connecticut that offers CT imaging with less radiation. It was a significant investment, but hospital officials believed that it was well worth it. In addition to less radiation exposure, the new CT device allows technicians to conduct whole body, Neurological and Cardiac Imaging. “The images are so good they will allow us to see things we couldn’t see before. Plus, we will be able to do state-of-the-art cardiac studies,” states Stephen Koch, MD, a board certified radiologist at Lawrence.
Dr. Koch, who has years of training and expertise in reading cardiac images, says he’ll be able to look at enhanced pictures of the coronary arteries. He’ll also be able to look inside the heart – section by section. “This kind of imaging is amazing because it can save lives. We can identify potential heart attack patients and make diagnoses that are more accurate,” adds Dr. Koch.
The new GE LightSpeed VCT XTe Low Dose 64 slice machine is up and running at Lawrence Hospital Center. If you are or your child are in need of a scan, you can call 914-787-5008 to schedule an appointment.
