Cooperstown, N.Y. – December 21, 2009 – Reginald Q. Knight, M.D., has joined Bassett Healthcare as Director of the Center for Spine Care. Board certified in orthopedic surgery and fellowship trained in advanced spine surgery, Dr. Knight will specialize in spine disorders and work in collaboration with other medical providers in treating patients. The Center is a collaboration of many areas within Bassett, including orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, physiatry/pain management and physical therapy.
"Dr. Knight is a national leader in developing new techniques and devices to perform less invasive back surgery," said Chief of Surgery Steven Heneghan, M.D. "Under Dr. Knight’s direction, our Center for Spine Care will provide a comprehensive and streamlined program of treating community members suffering with back pain."
Dr. Knight will provide consultation and treatment for patients with degenerative lumbar conditions, spinal stenosis, scoliosis, lumbar radiculopathy, as well as pediatric spinal deformities. He will offer a variety of treatment modalities, including minimally invasive surgery, balloon kyphoplasty for osteoporotic compression fractures and cervical/lumbar artificial disc replacement.
Immediately prior to joining Bassett, Dr. Knight was member of a private practice, Orthopedics International, in Seattle, Washington, with privileges at Swedish Hospital & Medical Center, Seattle; Evergreen Hospital & Medical Center, Kirkland; and Overlake Hospital & Medical Center, in Bellevue. He has held academic positions at the University of Nebraska, Creighton University, University of Washington, University of Rochester and New York Medical College.
Dr. Knight earned his undergraduate degree in the Oneonta area, receiving a Bachelor of Arts at the State University of New York at Oneonta, and completed his medical degree at State University of New York at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. His internships and residencies in general surgery and orthopedic surgery were done at New York Medical College, and he completed a Louis A. Goldstein fellowship in spinal surgery at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. Dr. Knight will completed a Master of Science in health care administration through Capella University in 2010.
Dr. Knight is an international lecturer and researcher on spine disorders and surgical techniques in the adult and pediatric patient, and has contributed textbook chapters and has been published in a variety of medical journals. He is a member of a number of professional organizations, including Society of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (Founding Member), National Medical Association, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society, American Spinal Injury Association, American Medical Association, Orthopaedic Research Society, Scoliosis Research Society and North American Spine Society.
