The luncheon celebrated the 45th year of operation of the Twigs Thriftree Thrift Shop in Mount Kisco, where the women raise funds for the Hospital year-round through the sale of donated items. To date, the Twigs have raised more than $2,700,000 for the NWH.

Approximately 100 Twigs members representing eight local Twigs groups  attended the luncheon and several dressed up in 1960s fashions to commemorate the 1964 opening of the shop. During the event, Twigs President Mary Santore presented NWH Foundation President Hatsy Vallar with a check for $90,000 which was raised through the Thrift Shop over the past year. Currently, all proceeds from the Twigs Thrift Shop will be earmarked for NWH’s planned new Emergency Department. In addition to fundraising, the Twigs to provide comfort items—such as cough pillows, layettes and tray favors—for NWH patients.

“The TWIGS are a shining example of the power community groups have to make a difference,” said Vallar, president of the Northern Westchester Hospital Foundation. “Their support of NWH has been tireless and has helped make possible the new Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center and upcoming new Emergency Department.  We are very grateful for all they do on behalf of NWH.”

The Twigs started at the Rochester City Hospital in 1887 when one of the hospital volunteers gathered a few friends together to hem hospital table napkins. The group began to meet on a regular basis and grew in size. At that time, they decided they were not really big enough to be called a branch of anything so they humorously called themselves “a twig.” In addition to sewing, they also became involved in special projects and benefits for the hospital. Over time as Twig members moved from Rochester, they established Twig groups at hospitals throughout the country.
