New York, NY – June 19, 2009 – On May 15, 2009, Downtown Hospital and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation took a major step in the battle against Breast Cancer with the acquisition and installation of a new, state-of-the-art Digital Mammography system at Downtown Hospital. The GE Healthcare Senographe Digital Mammography System provides physicians with clear and precise all-digital images, and patients with a fast andcomfortable alternative to the traditional, analog system. The digital images are accurate and easy to read, and offer a detailed view of the breast, especially for women with diverse breast tissue types. The digital image is ready to read within ten seconds, can be transmitted to a consulting physician almost immediately and can be magnified and adjusted to better focus on areas of concern. Digital mammography is able to detect more cancers than film mammography in women younger than 50, in women with dense breast tissue, and in women who are premenopausal.

“This system helps us to offer our patients state-of-the-art mammograms that are faster and easier than ever before while providing our referring physicians with extremely accurate diagnostic images,” said Dr. Robert Min, Chairman of the Downtown Hospital’sRadiology Department and Radiology-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Mr. Menkes expressed gratitude to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, which made this acquisition possible. “We are delighted that they have become our partners in this life-saving endeavor.” The Stavros Niarchos Foundation is an international philanthropic organization. The Foundation makes grants to not-for-profit organizations throughout theworld and maintains a major commitment to supporting programs in Greece through the guidance of a locally-based advisory committee.
