Teaneck, NJ – June 24, 2009 – For more than 80 years, Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, N.J., has provided healthcare excellence, compassionate medical and nursing care, and introduced technological advances in patient care. Continuing with its tradition of "first-rate patient care," Holy Name Hospital installed Swisslog's PillPick® automated drug management system.

The PillPick automated drug management system reduces medication errors by limiting the number of hands each dose must pass through to get to the patient. PillPick dispenses over 5,000 unit doses daily to Holy Name's 360 beds. The PillPick system's integrated components automate packaging, dispensing and storage while minimizing human intervention. The packaging modules prepare unit doses from bulk stock, and can over-wrap vials, cups, ampoules, syringes and blisters.

On May 5th, 2009, the Bronx Division of the New York State Podiatric Medical Association had the honor of presenting the first annual David Gutierrez Memorial Scholarship.  David Gutierrez was a graduate of NYCPM.  In attendance at the ceremony were the Gutierrez family, including David's wife, son and mother. The recipient was Blanca Diaz, a graduating senior from NYCPM. Blanca, originally from Puerto Rico, represented all that the committee was looking for in an applicant for the first scholarship.

One particular paragraph in her application stands out: "The four years I have been studying at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine were challenging, difficult, and rewarding. I overcame many obstacles when I moved to the Bronx from Puerto Rico four years ago to study podiatric medicine, including adaptation to the City and overcoming a language barrier. Participating and attending numerous extracurricular events at school have made the journey smoother."

Supported by a substantial founding donation from Bradley Bakotic, D.P.M., D.O., and Bako Pathology Services, the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening of its completely new, state-of-the-art Anatomy Lab.

The new lab, to be known as the Bako Anatomy Lab, is divided into two distinct sections, allowing for two separate courses to be run simultaneously.  The sections can also be combined.   Forty-eight students, at six per table, can work in the larger of the two rooms, and twelve students can work in the smaller one.

The Bako Anatomy Lab is state-of-the-art in terms of technology, environmental features, and aesthetics.  It has five twenty-two-inch, ceiling-mounted, flat-screen TV monitors, one fifty-inch, flat-screen LCD monitor, and one forty-two-inch, flat-screen LCD monitor.  The lab also has video cameras and a computer system to assist with instruction.  There is a large adjoining room for the storage of cadavers.  All in all, this ultra-modern new facility will enhance the learning experience for podiatric medical students at NYCPM for generations to come.

New York, NY – June 19, 2009 – On May 15, 2009, Downtown Hospital and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation took a major step in the battle against Breast Cancer with the acquisition and installation of a new, state-of-the-art Digital Mammography system at Downtown Hospital. The GE Healthcare Senographe Digital Mammography System provides physicians with clear and precise all-digital images, and patients with a fast andcomfortable alternative to the traditional, analog system. The digital images are accurate and easy to read, and offer a detailed view of the breast, especially for women with diverse breast tissue types. The digital image is ready to read within ten seconds, can be transmitted to a consulting physician almost immediately and can be magnified and adjusted to better focus on areas of concern. Digital mammography is able to detect more cancers than film mammography in women younger than 50, in women with dense breast tissue, and in women who are premenopausal.

Flushing, NY – June 9, 2009 – One of the world’s most respected medical journals, the New England Journal of Medicine, is publishing a landmark study this week that explores treatments for people with both Type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease. The Lang Research and Education Center of New York Hospital Queens, Flushing Queens was one of the sites that conducted this study.

The study, known as BARI 2D, (Bypass Angioplasty Revascularization Investigation 2 Diabetes) was also presented yesterday in New Orleans at the American Diabetes Association 69th Scientific Sessions – a national medical conference.  The results demonstrated that there is no difference in mortality among patients with type 2 diabetes and stable heart disease who received prompt bypass surgery or angioplasty compared to drug therapy alone.  The results also showed that while prompt bypass in patients with more severe heart disease did not lower mortality, it lowered their risk of subsequent major cardiac events.

Phyllis August, M.D., M.P.H., (photo above) director, Lang Research Center for Research and Education, New York Hospital Queens, served as a co-investigator and co-author of the study.  She called the results, “very exciting and good news.” “More than 20 million Americans suffer from type 2 diabetes and many of these people also have heart disease.  This deadly disease duo is affecting more and more people at increasingly younger ages.”

Nyack, NY – June 8, 2009 – New York State Senator Thomas P. Morahan, a cancer survivor, visited fellow cancer  survivors, care givers, families, friends, researchers, as well as healthcare providers who support cancer survivors as part of a National Cancer Survivors Day event at Nyack Hospital.   The Senator toured the hospital's Oncology Unit, Infusion Center, and viewed state-of-the-art imaging equipment at the Breast Center. Morahan, who secured a $ 1 million state grant to enhance services at the Breast Center, also welcomed the facility's new Director, Dr. Patricia K. Joseph, M.D., F.A.C.S.

America has approximately 12 million cancer survivors.  The Nyack Hospital event was among hundreds held around the country in observance of the 22nd annual National Cancer Survivors Day. National Cancer Survivors Day celebrates life and demonstrates that cancer is not an automatic death sentence.

“A ‘survivor’ is anyone living with a history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life. Cancer survivors may face many challenges such as hindered access to cancer specialists and promising new treatments, inadequate or no insurance, financial hardships, employment problems and psychological struggles," said Morahan."Despite these difficulties, cancer survivors can live active, productive lives."

Brooklyn, NY – June 2, 2009 – WyckoffHeightsMedicalCenter recently established HOPE, a home visits program for the frail, homebound elderly. Services include monthly health maintenance visits, sick call visits, vaccination administration, lab services, social services, home attendance referrals and physical therapy. With Alzheimer’s dementia a major diagnosis of patients in home visit programs, HOPE will also serve as a comprehensive resource for information on respite care, caregiver stress, and coping.

Under the direction of Rekha Bhandari, M.D., Director of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine and Chair of Elder Care Practice, a highly trained team of gerontology nurse practitioners and bi-lingual program coordinator has been assembled to provide clinical, administrative and outreach support for the program. Dr. Bhandari, who completed fellowships in geriatrics and palliative medicine at North Shore University Hospital/Manhasset and is board certified in internal medicine, geriatrics and palliative medicine, is working closely with local houses of worship, senior centers and community-based organizations to provide comprehensive healthcare services to a vulnerable population that might otherwise experience poorly coordinated, fragmented care.

Discussions are also underway to include training in home visits as part of rotations in Family Medicine for medical students and residents.

Mineola, NY – June 1, 2009 – The Institute for Cancer Care at Winthrop-University Hospital has once again received a stamp of approval by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer. Winthrop-University Hospital is proud to have earned this impressive honor from the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer yet again,” said John F. Collins, President and CEO of Winthrop-University Hospital. “This distinction is another example of our continued commitment to providing superior medical care to every individual that comes to Winthrop for healthcare and healing.”

Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1922, the Commission on Cancer is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education and the monitoring of comprehensive, quality care. Winthrop’s renowned Institute for Cancer Care was granted approval following a rigorous evaluation process and review of its compliance with the following standards – cancer committee leadership, data management, clinical services, research, community outreach and quality improvement.

White Plains, NY – June 3, 2009 – A “what if scenario” involving a dirty bomb detonation by a terrorist today tested the response of local hospitals, the City of White Plains Department of Public Safety and other agencies in the Hudson Valley to a large-scale event involving mass casualty injuries.

The interagency disaster drill began at 8:30 AM with a simulated terrorist incident at the former St. Agnes Hospital campus in White Plains.  The White Plains Department of Public Safety responded to the incident and mitigated the threat posed by an “improvised explosive device.” Police, Fire and EMS personnel rendered aid to victims played by volunteers, and White Plains Fire and White Plains Hospital Center personnel decontaminated victims at the scene. Patients were brought to White Plains Hospital Center where they were triaged in a tent erected in the Emergency Room parking lot. The Hospital, in cooperation with Westchester County, conducted a mock evacuation of some of its patients in order to make room for casualties from the explosion.

Another ‘parient’ with severe burns was taken by ambulance from White Plains Hospital Center to nearby NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Westchester Division for helicopter transportation to the burn unit at Westchester Medical Center.

Brooklyn, NY - June 11, 2009 - “I function day to day on a simple premise,” said Mervis Smith, R.N., a post anesthesia care unit nurse at New York Methodist Hospital (NYM). “If I take today and live it well, work to the best of my ability, then that day becomes the premise on which tomorrow is built.”

Ms. Smith was recently chosen by her peers to receive the Hospital’s 2009 Nurse of Distinction Award at the annual Nurse of Distinction Award Ceremony. The celebration honors registered nurses, nurse technicians and unit secretaries who make invaluable contributions to NYM each day. The annual awards ceremony is part of a series of events held during New York Methodist’s Nursing Appreciation Week. “I like to think of every nurse in this institution and every ancillary individual as a person of distinction,” said Rebecca Flood, R.N., senior vice president for nursing.
