Mineola, NY – April 9, 2009 – In an effort to assist healthcare providers in clinical decision-making for the successful treatment of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) – a rare genetic heart condition – the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American Heart Association (AHA) have formed a committee of 13 leading experts to develop guidelines for the diagnosis and management of the disease. Winthrop-University Hospital is pleased to announce that Srihari S. Naidu, MD, FACC, FAHA, FSCAI, Director of the Hospital’s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center, has been appointed to the 2010 ACC/AHA Guideline Writing Committee on the Diagnosis and Management of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy for his expertise in Alcohol Septal Ablation (ASA) – a minimally invasive technique used to treat HCM.

Dr. Naidu is among the few cardiac interventionalists trained and experienced in treating Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy with the advanced ASA technique. The treatment is only offered at select hospitals nationwide and provides a less invasive alternative to open-heart surgery.

“As experts in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, committee members were carefully selected by the ACC and AHA and charged with publishing comprehensive recommendations on disease management that will be followed by the broader national and international cardiology community,” said Dr. Naidu. “This appointment is a great honor and a testament to the great work at Winthrop-University Hospital to treat this rare disease.”

The committee’s final report containing their recommendations will be published simultaneously in Circulation and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology in early 2010.

The most common cause of heart-related sudden death in people under 30, HCM is a well-recognized cause of heart failure, chest pain, shortness of breath and premature death in adults. Designated a Center of Excellence by the national Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association (HCMA), Winthrop’s Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center offers comprehensive, expert care for HCM including cutting-edge therapies for patients who qualify.
