Ridgewood, NJ -- March 23, 2009 -- The Valley Hospital is pleased to announce that its Center for Sleep Medicine recently earned accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). Accreditation by the AASM is the gold standard by which the public and the medical community can evaluate sleep medicine services and demonstrates that Valley’s Center for Sleep Medicine continues to meet the highest standards of quality patient care.  Recognizing that accreditation is a hallmark of quality care, many insurance providers now cover sleep services only if they are performed in an AASM-accredited facility.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, approximately 70 million people in the United States are affected by a sleep problem. About 40 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep disorders, and an additional 20-30 million are affected by intermittent sleep-related problems. However, an overwhelming majority of sleep disorders remain undiagnosed and untreated.

“Poor sleep leads to impaired daytime functioning and is associated with serious health risks,” says sleep specialist and pulmonologist Jeffrey Barasch, M.D., Medical Director of the Center for Sleep Medicine.   “In patients with sleep apnea, the risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease increases by 200 to 400 percent.”  In addition, automobile accidents and on-the-job problems increase significantly for those who are sleep deprived, Dr. Barasch says.

The Valley Hospital Center for Sleep Medicine provides sleep medicine studies for patients 18 years and older within six comfortable private rooms with private bathroom/showers. Located at 579 Franklin Turnpike in Ridgewood, the Center features a panel of board-certified sleep medicine physician specialists and registered sleep technicians who monitor and assess patients for such sleep disorders as periodic limb movement disorder, obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, snoring, narcolepsy, and REM behavior disorder.
