Stamford, CT - November 21, 2008 - The Connecticut Center for Sleep Medicine at Stamford Hospital has again received program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).  The accreditation, which demonstrates the highest standards of quality patient care, lasts through the year 2013.

AASM accreditation involves a detailed inspection of a center's facility and staff, including an evaluation of testing procedures, patient contacts, and physician training.  The AASM currently accredits more than 1,500 sleep centers and laboratories across the country.

Stamford, CT - November 26, 2008 - The latest cancer treatments are not always prescribed by doctors.  At Stamford Hospital's Bennett Cancer Center, female patients are learning just that from the "Look Good...Feel Better" program. This free program teaches beauty techniques to women who are actively undergoing cancer treatment, to help them combat the appearance-related side effects of radiation and chemotherapy.

The next session of "Look Good...Feel Better" will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 10 from 4 - 6 p.m. at Stamford Hospital's Bennett Cancer Center Conference Room in Stamford.  For more information or to register, contact Michelle Palazzo at the Bennett Cancer Center, (203) 276-6143.

Stamford, CT- October 31, 2008 - Area patients no longer have to travel outside the community to receive non-emergent angioplasty after a diagnostic cardiac catheterization. Stamford Hospital now offers elective angioplasty, which involves the insertion of a catheter into a blocked artery in the heart. In this procedure, a small balloon on the end of the catheter is inflated, opening the artery and restoring blood flow to the heart.

Stamford Hospital has been successfully performing emergency angioplasty for over three years. The State Office of Health Care Access (OHCA) approved the hospital's request to perform elective angioplasty after it had completed 126 open heart surgeries. That milestone was reached in mid-October.

Stamford, CT - October 15, 2008 - Stamford Hospital has launched its Center for Integrative Medicine & Wellness at the Tully Health Center.  Designed to meet the region's growing demand for integrative approaches, the Center helps patients attain optimum health and healing with an integrative approach to medicine.  At the Center, patients can access scientific and evidence-based complementary medicine in tandem with standard medicine. All services are offered as a consultative practice through referrals from primary care and specialty physicians.

"Through our research, we found that there was a great interest and demand for integrative medicine to supplement current medical approaches," said Mary Henwood-Klotz, administrator of the Center for Integrative Medicine & Wellness.  "We have created a resource for the region that effectively focuses on healing the whole person - mind, body and spirit - and reinforces a culture of wellness.  The Center brings together the best of Western scientific medicine with other scientifically validated practices to promote healing and wellness."

Brooklyn, NY - November 11, 2008 - New York Methodist Hospital's Cornell Heart Center is one of a select group of cardiac surgery programs that now offers a minimally invasive procedure to treat thoracic aortic aneurysms.  Thoracic stent grafting, which recently received FDA approval, is designed for the treatment of an aneurysm located in one of the four regions of the aortic arch, a major blood vessel that feeds blood from the heart to the brain. Leonard Y. Lee, M.D., (photo above), is program director of cardiac surgery.

An aortic aneurysm is characterized by a dangerous swelling of the vessel, which may have been caused by high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis (a hardening of the arteries caused by built-up plaque) or a connective tissue disorder. Untreated, the condition could lead to hemorrhaging and death. While symptoms may include chest pain, back pain, and numbness or tingling of the arms, an aneurysm may cause no symptoms at all and is often identified incidentally, when a patient receives a CT scan or an x-ray to detect another problem.
