Cooperstown, NY - September 15, 2008 - Lawrence S. Zisman, M.D., Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and board certified in cardiology, has joined the Bassett Heart Care Institute as a heart failure specialist. Before joining Bassett, he was vice president of cardiovascular research at Cytopia, Inc., in Rensselaer, N.Y. and previous to that he was the medical director of Albany Medical Center Hospital's Heart Failure/Cardiac Transplantation Inpatient and Outpatient Service and the AMC Pulmonary Hypertension Program.

"We are pleased to have Dr. Zisman join the Heart Care Institute," said Chief of Cardiology Patrick McNulty, M.D. "His specialized training and experience will greatly benefit our patients with heart failure. This is an expertise we have not previously had at Bassett."

Heart failure specialists are cardiologists who have additional specialized training in taking care of people with advanced heart failure or have received a heart transplant or are being considered for one. Heart failure occurs when the heart's chambers (upper or lower or both) lose their ability to keep up with the amount of blood flow necessary for normal function, and can be due to a variety of factors, including coronary artery disease or certain valve conditions. Heart failure specialists are familiar with and have access to the most advanced therapies for heart failure.

Dr. Zisman graduated magna cum laude from Yale University, with his undergraduate degree in Molecular-Biophysics and Biochemistry. He received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, N.Y. He completed his internal medicine residency at the Westchester County Medical Center, in Valhalla, N.Y. and a cardiology fellowship at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, in Denver. He is a member of the American Heart Association's Council on Clinical Cardiology, and Basic Science Council and the Heart Failure Society of America.

Dr. Zisman has been a reviewer for a number of Peer Review Journals including Circulation, Journal of Cardiac Failure, Journal American College of Cardiology and the European Heart Journal. He has been published in Lancet, Circulation and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

According to the American Heart Association, more than five million Americans are living with heart failure, and approximately 550,000 new cases are diagnosed every year. Often the symptoms of heart failure such as fatigue, labored breathing or swelling of the legs are gradual and may go unnoticed by the patient.
