The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) - New Jersey Chapter, has named John C. Meditz of Weehawken the Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year. The prestigious award was formally presented to Meditz at the AFP's 2008 Excellence in Philanthropy Awards Dinner on Tuesday, May 6 at the Crystal Plaza in Livingston, New Jersey. John C. Meditz accepted the AFP-NJ's Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year Award from Elisse E. Glennon, VP/Executive Director of the Palisades Medical Center Foundation; Robert E. Wahlers, CFRE, President of the AFP-NJ Chapter; and Dawn K. Knill, Chair of the 5th Annual AFP Award Dinner.

Meditz is widely recognized as the driving force that helped establish the Palisades Medical Center Foundation in 1999. Since its inception, the Foundation has generated more than $5 million in donations under Meditz's leadership as Chairman.
In his role as Chairman of Palisades Medical Center's 30th Anniversary Campaign, Meditz has taken an active role generating $4.6 million in pledges to date. He also made a bold statement about his strong support for the Medical Center when he made a personal pledge of $1 million.
"Like other philanthropists, John plays a key role in supporting several worthy organizations through his tireless volunteer efforts and generous donations. But at his core, John is a true visionary and leader that has put these intangibles to work in creating a brighter future for Palisades Medical Center and our local community," said Bruce J. Markowitz, President and CEO of Palisades Medical Center.
Meditz has been vice chairman of Horizon Asset Management for 12 years, and is also a director of the firm. He currently serves as First Vice President/Treasurer of the Palisades Medical Center Board of Governors and has served on many committees for the hospital. He is a trustee and Treasurer of the Weehawken Public Library, a board member of the Weehawken High School Scholarship Committee, Chairman of the Weehawken Planning Board, and a trustee of Xavier High School. In recent years, Mr. Meditz served as a trustee of HSBC family of mutual funds and on Fairfield University's board of trustees.
