Mineola, NY - July 18, 2008 - Winthrop-University Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of (photo left) George Lazarou, MD, FACOG, to Chief of Gynecology. In addition, Martin Chavez, MD, (photo center) has been appointed Director of Obstetrical Ultrasound, and Wendy Kinzler, MD, (photo right) joins the Winthrop faculty as Director of the Adverse Pregnancy Outcome Program.

George Lazarou, MD, FACOG, Chief of Gynecology at Winthrop-University Hospital, is renowned for his expertise in providing exceptional care to patients with a range of complex surgical conditions including pelvic floor dysfunction - a condition in which the pelvic floor muscles of a woman' s lower pelvis do not function properly. In addition, Dr. Lazarou is specially trained in several minimally invasive procedures including advanced laparoscopy, vaginal reconstruction and anal sphincter repair for the treatment of urinary and fecal incontinence.
In light of his advanced sub-specialized expertise, Dr. Lazarou will also be a valued member of the faculty of Winthrop's Division of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery.
Dr. Lazarou joins Winthrop from the Jack D. Weiler Hospital and Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, where he served as Director of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery and Chief of Urogynecology respectively. Dr. Lazarou completed a Board-accredited Fellowship in Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine and currently serves as an Associate Clinical Professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
A recipient of many distinguished honors and awards, Dr. Lazarou has also published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks. Among his outstanding achievements,
Dr. Lazarou has served as reviewer for prestigious medical journals including the International Urogynecology Journal, Gynecology International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics and American Journal of Obstetrics and has presented at numerous conferences regionally, nationally and internationally.
Martin Chavez, MD, FACOG, has been named Director of Obstetrical Ultrasound at Winthrop. Dr. Chavez joins Winthrop from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he served as Director of Obstetrics/Gynecology Imaging and Technology Network in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
A board certified physician, Dr. Chavez completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and a fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he later served as an assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences.
An outstanding clinician, educator and researcher in the field of maternal-fetal medicine, Dr. Chavez's vast contributions to the field include extensive research on fetal transcerebellar diameter as the best predictor of gestational age in the third trimester.
Wendy Kinzler, MD, FACOG, joins Winthrop as the Director of the Adverse Pregnancy Outcome Program, which is geared toward helping couples who have had an adverse pregnancy outcome - recurrent miscarriage, still birth or pre-term birth - to understand the possible causes of the event and to plan for a successful pregnancy in the future.
Dr. Kinzler is the former Associate Director of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship Program and Director of the Pregnancy Loss and Preterm Birth Evaluation & Prevention Services at the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She is board certified in Obstetrics/Gynecology and Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
Dr. Kinzler's area of research includes fetal origins of adult disease and the pathogenesis and etiology of various adverse pregnancy outcomes, including fetal growth restriction, pregnancy loss, prematurity and stillbirth. Dr. Kinzler is a welcome addition to the Winthrop team, having made outstanding clinical and research contributions to the field and devoting a significant part of her career to resident and fellow education and training.
