Nyack, NY - July 29, 2008 - Nyack Hospital held a ribbon cutting ceremony in celebration of the redesign and renovation of its inpatient oncology unit.  This unit underwent extensive renovations including the construction of a 7-station inpatient infusion station featuring comfortable furnishings, individual television sets and an expansive view of the scenic Hudson River.  All patient areas were renovated with new flooring, wall covering and lighting.  The nursing station was redesigned, as well as staff areas, corridors and the patient lounge.

Cooperstown, NY - July 28, 2008 - Dr. Laura Schweitzer, chief academic officer at Bassett Healthcare and regional campus dean for Albany Medical College, has been selected as the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Women in Medicine Leadership Development Award winner for 2008. On a recent Friday, the faculty of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine gathered off-campus for the annual NYCPM Faculty Retreat.  Traditionally, the retreat has been more than just a time for reviewing the state of the College, hearing updates from the various departments and taking care of academic and administrative housekeeping items.  A substantial block of time during the day is given over to guest speakers who address issues at the heart of teaching and learning, issues central to what is most important to fulfilling the College's mission. 

This year, after a welcome by Michael J. Trepal, DPM, NYCPM's Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean, the entire four-hour morning session was given over to Susan Jacovino, Ph.D. and David Swanson, Ph.D., psychometricians from the National Board of Medical Examiners, who gave presentations and conducted workshops on current concepts in medical written examinations and on developing state-of-the-art assessment instruments.  Interest in these topics ran high, and NYCPM faculty members became active participants in the ensuing dialogue.

Levine, President & CEO of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, was honored recently by Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation, an independent, 527-bed, not-for-profit institution located in New Hyde Park, NY.  (Pictured, left to right) Louis L. President Levine was honored by Parker Jewish Institute's Associate Board of Trustees not only for his leadership and vision during his ongoing, seventeen-year tenure as President & CEO of NYCPM, but also for his long career in public service, which has included serving under three governors of New York State as Commissioner of Labor Affairs and as Industrial Commissioner of the State of New York.  He also served as Corporate Vice-President for Governmental and Public Affairs at Empire Blue Cross-Blue Shield, and as Chairman of the Executive Committee and Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of Group Health, Incorporated.

New York, NY - July 11, 2008 - For the second straight year, Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) has been named the top hospital in the nation in orthopedics by U.S.News & World Report in its 2008 "America's Best Hospitals" survey. Hospital for Special Surgery also ranked fourth in the nation for rheumatology.  For the 18th consecutive year, HSS has ranked above all other hospitals in the Northeast in orthopedics and rheumatology.

Cooperstown, NY - July 17, 2008 - For the second time, Bassett has received the nation's highest honor for nursing excellence, Magnet Recognition by the American Nurses Association (ANA). For a health care organization to be designated under the Magnet Recognition Program, it has to demonstrate exceptional standards of nursing practice. New York, NY - July 8, 2008 - Insurance industry and health care executive Stanley S. Mandel, President and Chief Executive Officer of Arista Investors Corporation and former Chairman of the Board of Kingsbrook Holding Corporation and Executive Vice President of Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, was recently elected as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM).  Mr. Mandel has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the College for the last five years. His one-year term of service as Chairman will be effective on July 1, 2008, when the term of the current Chairman, Maj. Gen. William F. Ward, A.U.S. (Ret.), ends. 

Stanley S. Mandel holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees, in both mathematics and economics, from Brooklyn College.  Mr. Mandel has served as a senior executive in the insurance industry, in a series of increasingly high-level positions.  Early in his career, he was an Assistant Vice President at the Northeastern Life Insurance Company and at the United States Life Insurance Company.  Subsequently, he was a Vice President at the Eastern Life Insurance Company.  Beginning in 1971, he served as Executive Vice President and Partner at Serv-Co Administrators Inc.  In 1980, he joined Mutual of Omaha/Companion Life Insurance Company as Group Vice President, and in 1983 he became President and Chief Executive Officer of Arista Investors Corporation and Arista Insurance Company.
