Sleepy Hollow, NY - June 1, 2008 - The capital campaign at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center topped the $20 million mark when it ended on May 31, doubling the original $10 million goal set in 2003. A significant portion of the $20 million raised will go towards the construction of the new emergency department, scheduled to open in the fall of 2008. The balance will fund other hospital initiatives.

During the course of the five-year campaign, Phelps Memorial Hospital Center had three $1 million-plus individual donors. In addition, Phelps received several large grants including an $800,000 grant from The Kresge Foundation, the largest-ever grant in Phelps' history. The campaign was initially under the leadership of Cabinet Chair Bard E. Bunaes of Irvington, who is now chairman of the board of directors at Phelps. William O. Melvin, Jr. of Scarborough and Katherine J. Mackie of Irvington co-chaired the campaign.

At 22,000 square feet, Phelps' new Emergency Department will be nearly three times larger than the present department. It will include 30 private rooms, with emphasis on patients' physical and emotional comfort, and will feature state-of-the-art medical technology. Patients will be brought directly to their room for treatment without spending time in a waiting room. Other features will include a designated section for children with an adjacent playroom, and a PromptCare area for treatment of less urgent cases.

The new Emergency Department will be vastly more comfortable for patients and their families and will provide an optimal environment in which physicians and nurses can continue to offer the superior medical care for which Phelps is known.

Phelps Memorial Hospital Center is a 235-bed community hospital with 450 medical staff, representing 34 clinical specialties. Phelps is the exclusive Westchester satellite for Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, a clinical affiliate of Mount Sinai Hospital, and a member of the New York-Presbyterian Healthcare System.  www.phelpshospital.org
