Stamford, CT - April 7, 2008 - Stamford Hospital's Diagnostic Imaging Center at Tully Health Center has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR).  The hospital is one of five out of the state's 133 breast imaging centers to have achieved this level of distinction.

The designation recognizes breast imaging centers' dedication to improving women's health through a rigorous quality assurance program.  The program is administered by ACR's Commission on Quality and Safety and the Commission on Breast Imaging.

"Being recognized as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence is a tremendous achievement as well as a great honor," said Dr. Caren Greenstein, Director of Breast Imaging.  "Our radiology services for Stamford Hospital's Women's Breast Center have been growing tremendously over the past few years. Taking part in the accreditation process has been extremely rewarding for everyone at the Women's Breast Center.  Ultimately, this designation establishes that our services, expertise and equipment are at the highest level of quality when compared with other imaging centers nationwide."

Designated centers have participated in all of ACR's voluntary, breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program. Accreditation includes mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy.  Peer-review evaluations, conducted in each breast imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field, have determined that this facility has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualification, facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs.

Stamford Hospital's Women's Breast Center employs all-digital mammography and a wide range of screening and diagnostic options, including breast ultrasound and breast MRI.  The Women's Breast Imaging Center also provides technically superior, minimally invasive breast biopsies and procedures, in a comfortable and supportive environment. The Center's multidisciplinary approach to breast health has physicians, nurses and support staff in surgery, oncology and pathology working collaboratively in one convenient location.  The Women's Breast Center offers breast imaging services at Tully Health Center's Diagnostic Imaging Center as well as the Darien Imaging Center, which opened in 2006.
