Winthrop-University Hospital, the primary teaching affiliate for the SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine, is a 591-bed medical center with a deep commitment to medical education and research. Winthrop is a New York State Department of Health-designated Regional Trauma Center and Stroke Center that is recognized by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s (AHA/ASA) Get with the Guidelines Program with the Gold level performance achievement award for excellence in stroke care. As a Regional Perinatal Center (RPC), Winthrop also delivers the highest level of obstetrical and perinatal care. Our Children’s Medical Center is a member of the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI). Winthrop is also a Spirit of Women ® Hospital.

An active Emergency Departmentthat cares for nearly 57,000 patients annually includes an Adult Trauma Unit, a Fast Track Unit, and a comprehensive Mistretta Chest Pain Unit with a separate, dedicated Pediatric Emergency Suite.
Winthrop’s Institute for Heart Care offers advanced diagnostics and disease prevention programs, as well as sophisticated medical treatment and rehabilitation. Among Winthrop’s state-of-the-science facilities are a Heart Surgery Center and the John D.Miller Interventional Cardiology Pavilion, which includes the technologically advanced Cardiac Catheterization Center and a new state-of-the-art Electrophysiology Center.
The Institute for Cancer Care, certified by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer, provides a full spectrum of care for adults, and for children and adolescents at Winthrop’s Cancer Center for Kids. In addition, Winthrop is the New York Metro area’s only Cyberknife ® Stereotactic Radiosurgery Center.
Winthrop’s Diabetes Education Center is the first diabetes-education program in New York State to be accredited by the American Diabetes Association. The Dialysis Center, the largest hospital-based program in the region, is regarded as a model facility nationwide.
Winthrop’s American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) accredited Sleep DisordersCenter is a specialty service of the Institute for Lung Care. Nationally recognized pulmonary specialists at the Institute provide the most advanced therapy and address quality-of-life needs of patients with a variety of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases.
Winthrop’s Institute for Digestive Disorders is a comprehensive resource for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of digestive and nutritional problems. The Institute delivers high-tech diagnostics and intervention through the comprehensive McCann Endoscopy Center.
Men, women and children of all ages and ethnicities receive expert, gender-specific care from specialists in Winthrop’s Institute for Family Care. Health services are provided through vertically and horizontally integrated programs in all medical and surgical specialties. In addition, Winthrop’s Hagedorn Pediatric Inpatient Center offers a broad scope of pediatric programs including a range of sophisticated subspecialty services for infants, children and adolescents.
Winthrop’s Institute for Neurosciences provides the full range of neurological services, including diagnostic, surgical, and radiologic treatment. These programs are supported by a dedicated inpatient wing that includes a 14-bed Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Ranked a top-performing Hospital by the New York State Health Accountability Foundation, Winthrop-University Hospital is also the recipient of the Island Peer Review Organization’s (IPRO) Quality Award for 2007 for excellence in IPRO’s Surgical Care Improvement Project.
