General Description and Service Area
New York Hospital Queens (NYHQ) is a 439-bed, acute care teaching hospital located in Flushing,
Queens. Formerly Booth Memorial Medical Center, NYHQ was founded by The Salvation Army
in 1957, and in 1993 its sponsorship was officially assumed by the New York Hospital. NYHQ
provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services, including the only cardiac surgery
program in the borough of Queens.
Outpatient services include a network of ambulatory clinic sites, located primarily in northern
Queens. NYHQ also operates an extensive home health program including a Certified Home
Health Agency and a Long-Term Home Health Care Program.
The Hospital’s primary service area encompasses the northcentral section of Queens, including the
neighborhoods of Flushing, Whitestone, and College Point. Due to the high concentration of Asian
immigrants in several of these communities, NYHQ’s patient population has the highest percentage
of Asian patients of any System hospital, at approximately 15%.
Utilization/Market Statistics
NYHQ’s serves nearly 10% of total inpatient discharges for Queens residents, and over 50% in
certain regions of Northern Queens. In 2002, the Hospital discharged a total of 27,826 patients and
served over 112,00 outpatient clinic visits. Ambulatory surgeries totaled 7,745 and the emergency room saw 48,517 patients.
