New York Downtown Hospital, the only remaining acute care hospital south of 14th Street in Manhattan, is a community teaching hospital combining personal attention to every patient with coordinated university level medical care. New York Downtown Hospital has a deep commitment to medical education and research. The Hospital’s mission is shaped by the core value of “Patient First,” and a dedication to the integrity, comfort and health of every individual.

The Hospital plays a critical role in the communities it serves, which include the Financial District; Chinatown; Battery Park City; Little Italy; Tribeca; City Hall; Police Plaza; the Federal, State and City Courthouse complex; and the rapidly expanding residential community of Lower Manhattan. The Financial District is recognized as one of the fastest-growing residential communities in New York.

In addition, an increasing number of patients from SoHo, Greenwich Village, Union Square and the Lower West Side are relying on the Hospital for emergency, medical, obstetrical and surgical services.

Upon meeting stringent requirements for speed and quality of care, New York Downtown Hospital was designated a Stroke Center by the New York State Department of Health. The Hospital was also recognized by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s (AHA/ASA) “Get with the Guidelines” Program with the Gold Level Performance Achievement Award for excellence in stroke care for two years in a row.

New York Downtown Hospital has an active Emergency Department that cares for 40,000 patients annually. The ED includes an Adult Trauma Unit, a Fast Track Unit, and a comprehensive Chest Pain Unit with a separate, dedicated Pediatric Emergency Suite.

In 2007, New York Downtown Hospital launched an $8 million building project which added a new Wellness & Prevention Center, with components dedicated to Cardiology, Women’s Health and Preventive Medicine. The Center opened in early 2011. The Hospital is presently engaged in an expansion of its ambulatory surgery facilities and numerous other enhancements, including a new parking facility.

The opening of a joint practice with Weill Cornell Medical Associates in Tribeca, which includes two New York Downtown Hospital obstetrician/gynecologists as members of its clinical team, strengthens the deepening relationship between New York Downtown and Weill Cornell Medical College.

The Hospital offers a full spectrum of sophisticated diagnostic and surgical procedures for inpatients and outpatients. The Hospital continuously adds new clinical programs for its centers of excellence. The Hospital is recognized for its professional excellence in Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics, Gynecology and Orthopedics. The Hospital’s physicians provide expertise in virtually every medical specialty. New York Downtown Hospital also delivers the highest level of obstetrical and perinatal care. The Hospital delivers about 3,000 babies every year.

Staff members at New York Downtown Hospital, who serve one of the most culturally diverse populations in the nation, care for patients in a manner that addresses the community’s distinctive cultural differences. A strong commitment to customer service allows the Hospital to provide excellence every day, not only in clinical areas, but also for the patient’s spiritual, emotional and comfort care. With its large Chinese population, the Hospital provides 24 hour Chinese translation services as well as culturally appropriate meals.

Physical therapy and occupational therapy services are provided on-site at the Hospital.

The Hospital has served the community for more than 150 years, tracing its roots to Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first female physician in the United States, who founded the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children in 1857. New York Downtown Hospital is a proud member of the NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System and an academic affiliate of Weill Cornell Medical College.

New York Downtown Hospital is accredited by The Joint Commission.
